Grade Six

In Sixth Grade, Catholic teachings and values are interwoven in all curriculum areas.  We also raise money for our local Birthright office, shop for baby layettes, and take them to Birthright where we are given a tour. We pray daily for the many needs of our students and their families, and for the requests of others who ask us to pray for them as well.

Sixth Graders are partnered for the school year with First Grade Students. They listen to the younger partners read, help them with art projects, help them learn to participate at school Mass and other religious events, and play with them. They become very good friends.

Sixth Grade students also have the opportunity to be Mass Servers and participate in the School Patrol.

We utilize SMART Boards and document cameras to enhance student learning.

Focus on Curriculum

Math: Math topics covered in Sixth Grade include Operations with Whole Numbers and Decimals, Data Analysis, Statistics, Probability, Fractions, Integers and Rational Numbers, Expressions and Equations, Ratio/Proportion/Percent, Geometry, and Graphing.

Religion: Focus on the Old Testament and the Saints.

Reading: Our reading program follows the Minnesota Standards for 6th Grade Reading to learn required skills. We put the skills to practice using the students’ own choice of appropriate reading material. Students keep a reading response journal in which they write a weekly entry to summarize their reading, that week’s writing skill, and a personal response to the book. Students learn about literary genres and read books from each genre throughout the school year. Students give book talks to the class as books are completed. I read to the class every day and we discuss literary devices used by the author. I have a very extensive classroom library and continue to work to update the selection of books.

English: In addition to the Reading program, English skills are taught to provide students additional writing and grammar skills. Students learn how to write an excellent research report; sixth grade students write the report on a person of their choice. Many alumni have reported using these same techniques when writing papers in high school and beyond.

Spelling: Students work on 20 words per week which all relate to a specific spelling pattern or rule. In addition, students can earn bonus points for taking on challenge words each week.

Social Studies: MN History

Science: The big focus is on learning the Scientific Method, including many hands on experiments. Sixth Graders are required to do their own science experiment complete with a 3-sided board and other visuals that apply to the experiment. We provide an excellent scientific background for our students and many alumni have gone on to successfully complete in high school science and engineering contests.

Band: Sixth Grade students have the opportunity to participate in Band by joining the Hutchinson Middle School Band each week for lessons and full band practice.

Specialists: We have specialists for Computer, Music, and Phy Ed.

Sports: Sixth Grade students who are interested in participating in sports are encouraged to join St. Anastasia Basketball or other activities offered through Hutchinson Middle School.
