Grade Three

In Third Grade, we add multiplication and cursive to the list of student accomplishments. Throughout the year we write letters to seminarians and veterans. In the spring, third graders plant seeds in the greenhouse and gardens. Then in the fall they harvest pumpkins, tomatoes, potatoes, etc to share with their families. They also make sauerkraut from freshly grown cabbage. We enjoy partnering with Fifth Grade and Kindergarten students. These partners help the students during special events and activities in the school.

Focus on Curriculum

Reading: Our goal is to expose students to a wide variety of genres. Working in both large and small groups, we focus on direct instruction, fluency, guided reading, vocabulary development, and daily oral language. In addition, we use the Accelerated Reading program to increase comprehension.

Spelling: We study 18 words a week and also some challenge words. Midyear, students write the spelling words in cursive.
Reports: Third graders write two big reports (on presidents and planets) using the Writing Process.

Math: Saxon Math makes lessons fun and engaging for students. Topics include Numbers & Operations, Algebra & Geometry, Measurement, Data Analysis & Probability, Problem Solving, and Reasoning & Proof. Students are encouraged to achieve the Math Hall of Fame by learning their multiplication tables.

Science: In Science, we cover three units: Life Science, Physical Science, and Earth Science.

Religion: We memorize and learn the meaning of the Apostles’ Creed. We also learn Bible parts and verses. Each week, we go to Adoration in the Day Chapel. We study what being Catholic means, how we worship, and how we pray and live.

Social Studies: Our social studies units focus on communities: Community & Geography, America’s Early Communities, People Move from Place to Place, Community Government and Making Economic Choices.
